GIS and the Florida Geographic Data
Library (FGDL) is a continuing education course
developed by the GeoPlan Center. The purpose of the
course is to teach planners, environmental scientists
and other professionals how to use the Florida data
available in the FGDL with Geographic Information
Systems (GIS). | The two-day instructor-aided course will cover basic
GIS concepts and skills using the FGDL's Florida data, the
FGDLView ArcView extension and the FGDLExplorer Viewer.
Rudimentary experience with ArcView is required before
taking this course. A related course, also taught at
the TREEO center, is the Desktop GIS: Introduction to
ArcView Course. That class will prepare you for this one.
A discount is given to those registering for both courses.
Each student will learn how to use FGDLView (an extension
to ArcView GIS software) and FGDLExplorer, a free data-viewing
application. This course gives an overview of the FGDL,
general GIS concepts and terms, and how to access and use the
FGDL data and associated data documentation. Students will
work through several basic and advanced GIS analysis exercises
using the FGDL data on individual Windows NT computers. Upon
completion of the class, students will receive a free FGDL
CD-ROM containing approximately 100 data layers for the
Florida county of their choice.
The course will cost $595 which includes an FGDL
Data CD-ROM. When you also register for the course Desktop
GIS: Introduction to ArcView, this course only costs
$500. |

| What will you learn? |
- General GIS concepts and terms, such as scale,
projection, and accuracy
- How to understand and manipulate the FGDL data
- How to visually represent FGDL data layers in ArcView
with your preferred color scheme - make a map of your
neighborhood that presents habitat, transportation, or land
use information
- How to move around the geographic data - for example,
how to zoom into a neighborhood and back out to the county
perspective or pan along a transportation line
- How to select features in various ways, ascertain
information about the selected features, and query the FGDL
database - Answer questions such as :
- How far away is the the closest conservation land from
your house?
- What sorts of habitat and species could you see in
this conservation land?
- How to perform GIS analysis - Determine the assessed
taxable value of all the vacant lands within ½ mile of a
major road in your county and overlay the surrounding land
uses. Find out:
- Are there economically-sound potential locations for
new industrial and commercial businesses?
- Is the newly-proposed highway in your county going to
cut through any environmentally-sensitive lands?
- How to create maps with spatial data, charts, tables and
images
- How to import data from other widely-used software into
your GIS analysis
- How to do advanced spatial analysis, such as buffers,
union, intersects, and identities
|
| What will you receive? |
- An FGDL CD-ROM containing approximately 100 data layers
for the Florida county of your choice, the FGDLView ArcView
extension and the FGDLExplorer Viewer.
- A notebook containing the course help file (lessons,
solutions, reference notes, etc.)
- 2.1 Continuing Education (CEU) Credits
- A Certificate of Course Completion
