It's all about the metadata.
Metadata is an integral part of any dataset. Without it, how do we know what the data means, how it was created, when it was created, and whether its worthy to use? In the simplest terms, metadata is data about data. Metadata is distributed with each FGDL dataset to provide the user with information about that dataset. We do our best to gather as much information about the dataset as possible. Below is an explanation of the metadata files that accompany each FGDL dataset, and how you
can download each metadata file.

There are three metadata files that accompany each FGDL dataset:

|
The naming convention for FGDL metadata files is as follows:
| ||||||||
For shapefiles and images, the three metadata files are located with the dataset
and its associated files. For example, the shapefile "cntbnd.shp", will have the
associated metadata files:

| *For grids, the FGDC XML metadata is named differently and is not on
same level as the dataset. The XML file is contained within the folder
which holds the raster files (eg: vat.adf, sta.adf , dblbnd.adf, prj.adf, etc)
and is named "metadata.xml". This is necessary for the XML metadata to be
viewed in ArcCatalog. | ||||||||
