Abstract:: This geospatial dataset shows the final marine and estuarine critical habitat units for Gulf sturgeon. This includes Units 8 through 14. There is a separate geospatial dataset that shows the final riverine critical habitat Units 1 through 7.
Purpose:: This dataset is provided for illustrative purposes only. This dataset does NOT represent the legal definition of marine critical habitat units for Gulf sturgeon. For the precise legal definition, please refer to the narrative unit descriptions as listed in the Federal Register, 50 CFR Part 17, Designation of Critical Habitat for the Gulf Sturgeon; Final Rule, February 28, 2003.
Supplemental_Information:: Critical habitat identifies specific areas that are essential to the conservation of a listed species, and that may require special management considerations or protection. Section 7(a)(2) of the Act requires that Federal agencies ensure that actions they fund, permit, or carry out are not likely to result in the destruction or adverse modification of critical habitat. The regulatory effect of the critical habitat designation does not extend beyond those activities funded, permitted, or carried out by Federal agencies. State or private actions, with no Federal involvement, are not affected.

This layer updates an existing layer in FGDL called GULF_STURGEON_P. The layer that already existed in FGDL did not match the new layer downloaded. We contacted Wendy_Gierhart@fws.gov and she helped us determine that the layer we had in FGDL needed to be updated.
