This dataset was created based on the narrative unit descriptions as listed in the Federal Register, 50 CFR Part 17, Designation of Critical Habitat for the Gulf Sturgeon; Final Rule, February 28, 2003.

GeoPlan relied on the integrity of the attribute information within the original data.

Critical habitat identifies specific areas that are essential to the conservation of a listed species, and that may require special management considerations or protection. Section 7(a)(2) of the Act requires that Federal agencies ensure that actions they fund, permit, or carry out are not likely to result in the destruction or adverse modification of critical habitat. The regulatory effect of the critical habitat designation does not extend beyond those activities funded, permitted, or carried out by Federal agencies. State or private actions, with no Federal involvement, are not affected.

This data set was created using ArcView 3.2a Process Date: 20020723 GeoPlan downloaded this data from http://criticalhabitat.fws.gov/ in January of 2009. The layer was originally in GCS NAD83 projection. This layer updates an existing layer in FGDL called GULF_STURGEON_P. The layer that already existed in FGDL did not match the new layer downloaded. We contacted Wendy_Gierhart@fws.gov and she helped us determine that the layer we had in FGDL needed to be updated. -Upcased all records -Added Descript field based on UNIT_NAME field -Added FGDLAQDATE -Deleted OBJECTID field -Projected to FGDL Albers -Rename from gulf_sturgeon_poly.shp to GULF_STURGEON_P_CH Process Date: 20090123 Data imported to ArcSDE and exported as a shapefile. Process Date: 20090127
