The layer indicates historical structures greater than 50 years old that may have significant historical or cultural value in Gilchrist County at the building and parcel level. The information contained in this layer is a start for a historical structures layer but is incomplete as far as information required by Florida State Master File listing.This GIS layer was produced by the North Central Florida Regional Planning Council (NCFRPC) under contract with FDOT District 2 in early 2005 and is one of many layers that fall into the general category of "sociocultural" GIS data. Specifications and oversight were provided by FDOT and by the Geoplan Center at the University of Florida.
The North Central Florida Regional Planning Council (NCFRPC) is working with the Florida Department of Transportation, District 2 to create regional maps of "sociocultural" features, including hospitals, parks, cemeteries, historical structures, and others. The maps will provide the FDOT with improved spatial information required for planning roadway projects. This project will compile existing spatial data and integrate different source data into a single data set for each theme, in a format required by DOT for use in the EST and other applications. In the process, the locations will be verified and corrected to the extent possible; feature attribution will be completed in accordance with current design standards for SCE data; obsolete features and other commission errors, such as demolished buildings, will be removed.

Gilchrist historic layer is the beginning stages of development and includes a previously unpublished survey of structures in Trenton done in 1999 by Charlan Owens. Locations identified by the Property Appraiser parcel data were not sufficient to identify all structures and if the structures are still standing. Field work was done to verify the existence of structures, but buildings were not evaluated for historical significance. Overall there are significant structures and sites in Gilchrist County that should be listed with the Florida State Master Site File, but additional funding would be necessary to accomplish the survey of Gilchrist County.
