Description:
Abstract:
This dataset contains cities and towns of Florida. These cities were collected from the 1970 National Atlas of the United States. Where applicable, U.S. Census Bureau codes for named populated places were associated with each name to allow additional information to be attached. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) was also used as a source for additional information. This is a revised version of the February 2000 data set.
Purpose:
These data are intended for geographic display and analysis at the national level, and for large regional areas. The data should be displayed and analyzed at scales appropriate for 1:2,000,000-scale data. No responsibility is assumed by the U.S. Geological Survey in the use of these data.

Attribute_Accuracy_Explanation:
Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modelling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data. 1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger. Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact section of this documentation. For more information regarding scale and accuracy, see our webpage at: http://geoplan.ufl.edu/education.html. These data are based on interpretation of available information and should not be construed as legally binding.

Process_Description:
The data was orginally produced as U.S. Geological Survey, 1995, 1:2,000,000-scale Digital Line Graphs. The data was then downloaded by the GeoPlan Center in shapefile format from http://mrdata.usgs.gov/sddpftp.html in 2001. Data was reprojected and clipped. When received, data was in Geodetic Lat Long, Datum: NAD83, Spheroid: GRS1980, Units: Decimal degrees.
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
GeoPlan, during the QA/QC process included the following aspects: 1.)Projected data to FGDL Albers HPGN (See "Map Projection Parameters" below). 2.)Clipped to State of Florida 3.)DESCRIPT item was added based on city or town name 4.)Upcased all character items 5.)Dropped items: Area, Perimeter and CITIESX020

Attribute_Label: DISPLAY
Attribute_Definition:
A value used to specify whether a place name text label will be shown at the most detailed display scale in the National Atlas map browser. It is determined by a ratio based on population size and distance to nearest town and was set by the following steps: 1. Distance to the nearest neighbor was calculated for each populated place. 2. Population density was calculated by adding the 1990 population values for each county and then dividing the total by the area of the county. The 1990 population values of -99999 were set to 1. 3. A display ratio was calculated using the formula 1990 Population x Distance / Population Density. 4. Display was set to 1 for all points with a minimum result of 15000, and set to 0 for the remainder of points.
