Description:
Abstract:
This dataset is a digitization of the 17" x 21" paper Map titled "Sinkhole Type, Development and Distribution in Florida", also known as Map Series 110, and contains descriptions and soil compositions of Florida sinkholes.
Purpose:
Sinkholes are a natural and common geologic feature in areas underlain by limestone and other rock types that are soluble in natural water. The term sinkhole is used for closed depressions in the land surface that are formed by surficial solution or by subsidence or collapse of surficial materials owing to the solution of near-surface limestone or other soluble rocks. Discussion here refers to sinkhole occurence in limestone and dolomite, the most common rock types in Florida.

This shapefile is a based on the 17" x 21" paper Map titled "Sinkhole Type, Development and Distribution in Florida" also known as Map Series 110 and published 1985 by United States Geological Survey in cooperation with the Florida Department of Environmental Regulation, Bureau of Water Resources Management and Florida Department of Natural Resources, Bureau of Geology.

Attribute_Accuracy_Explanation:
FDEP FGS data is provided as a public service. FGS makes every effort to provide accurate and complete data. Metadata is provided for all datasets and no data should be used without first reading and understanding the limitations of the data. The State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection provides NO WARRANTY for the availability or accuracy of this GIS data.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
These data are believed to be logically consistent, though no tests were performed. Polygon geometry is topologically clean.
Completeness_Report:
The boundary of Florida is dependent on the shoreline and/or edges of rivers and bays as delineated on a USGS 7.5 minute Topographic Map. The edges or borders of the boundary might change as the natural land changes or better maps and aerial photography become available. The boundary was not based on legal parcels or definitions.

Process_Description:
1. Used Adobe Acrobat digital version of Map titled "Sinkhole Type, Development and Distribution in Florida", also known as Map Series 110 and published 1985 by Florida Department of Natural Resources, Bureau of Geology and exported as uncompressed TIFF image at 300 Dot per inch. 2. Used Autocad Map 2000 to "Rubbersheet" the image using the intersections of countylines on the TIFF with the intersections of the vector county coverage from Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP), Bureau of Information Services (BIS). This vector coverage was digitized from scanned Noaa Charts and 1:24k Digital Line Graphs according to BIS metadata. A rough check of the rubbersheeted image showed differences of no more than 2000 meters plus or minus which were judged by Tom Scott to be not significant. 3. Brought "Rubbersheeted" image into Arcview 3.2a and digitized polygons to match the Areas shown as Areas I, II, III and IV. Then "clipped" the polygons with the said vector county coverage using Arcview 3.2a Geoprocessing wizard.
