Description:
Abstract:
This dataset contains Hydrologic Cataloging Units for the State of Florida. The Cataloging Unit currently represents the fourth level of hydrologic classification and the smallest element in the hierarchy of hydrologic units. Cataloging Units are sometimes called "watersheds". See "User Notes" for further description of the hydrological classification system.
Purpose:
For reference of Hydrologic Cataloging Units for the State of Florida.

Quantitative_Attribute_Accuracy_Assessment:
Attribute_Accuracy_Explanation:
Hydrologic units are classified into four levels: regions, sub-regions, accounting units, and cataloging units. The hydrologic units are arranged within each other, from the smallest (cataloging units) to the largest (regions). Each hydrologic unit is identified by a unique hydrologic unit code (HUC). The data in this coverage are the smallest cataloging units.
Quantitative_Attribute_Accuracy_Assessment:
Attribute_Accuracy_Explanation:
The first level of classification divides the Nation into 21 major geographic areas, or regions. These geographic areas contain either the drainage area of a major river, such as the Missouri region, or the combined drainage areas of a series of rivers, such as the Texas-Gulf region, which includes a number of rivers draining into the Gulf of Mexico. Eighteen of the regions occupy the land areaof the conterminous United States. Alaska is region 19, the Hawaii Islands constitute region 20, and Puerto Rico and other outlying Caribbean areas are region 21.
Quantitative_Attribute_Accuracy_Assessment:
Attribute_Accuracy_Explanation:
The second level of classification divides the 21 regions into 222 subregions. A subregion includes the area drained by a river system, a reach of a river and its tributaries in that reach, a closed basin(s), or a group of streams forming a coastal drainage area.
Quantitative_Attribute_Accuracy_Assessment:
Attribute_Accuracy_Explanation:
The third level of classification subdivides many of the subregions into accounting units. These 352 hydrologic accounting units nest within, or are equivalent to, the subregions.
Quantitative_Attribute_Accuracy_Assessment:
Attribute_Accuracy_Explanation:
The fourth level of classification is the cataloging unit, the smallest element in the hierarchy of hydrologic units. [Efforts are underway to add further levels of subdivisions.] A cataloging unit is a geographic area representing part of all of a surface drainage basin, a combination of drainage basins, or a distinct hydrologic feature. These units subdivide the subregions and accounting units into smaller areas. There are 2150 Cataloging Units in the Nation. [Cataloging Units sometimes are called "watersheds." See, for example, the EPA Surf Your Watershed site.]
Quantitative_Attribute_Accuracy_Assessment:
Attribute_Accuracy_Explanation:
The description of hydrologic units was taken from the USGS website, <http://water.usgs.gov/GIS/huc.html> Regional variations of basin borders and the number of basins may exist between updates. Please note, the Everglades portion of the SFWMD subset was changed from HUC 03090204 to HUC 03090202 by Bernadette Chasteen of Water Facilities (850/487-1784) in order to resolve a boundary dispute/question discovered by the EPA. Basin boundaries were used to create the new linework. 9/95 The dataset provides location and attribute information for use in national and regional cartographic and network analysis applications.
Quantitative_Attribute_Accuracy_Assessment:
Attribute_Accuracy_Explanation:
Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modelling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data.

1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:250000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger.

Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analyses. Every effort has been made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact section of this documentation. For more information regarding scale and accuracy, see our web pages at:

In 2002, this data was downloaded in shapefile format by the GeoPlan Center from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection website: ftp.dep.state.fl.us. When received, the data was in Albers HPGN projection.

The dataset's prior history (from FDEP) is as follows:

NOTES ON DERIVATION : The HUCbasin boundaries were derived from the latest basin coverage (3/97) by dissolving on the item 'HUC' with the poly option, using A/I 7.0.4. EXPLANATION OF PROCEDURES USED TO TRANSFORM THE DATA For more information, please refer to the Basins-24 metafile. In Spring '97, the data was converted from NAD27 to HPGN using the projection commmand within ARC/INFO version 7.0.4.
