<purpose>The mission of Landsat is to provide for repetitive acquisition of high resolution multispectral data of the earth's surface on a global basis to emphasize its primary area of interest, land resources. TM images may be used for general landscape, identification and classification, as well as temporal studies of change detection over time. The imagery may be used to view growth, urbanization patterns and land usage. It can also simply be used as a background image on which to overlay other datasets. </purpose></descript><citation><citeinfo><origin>Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC)</origin><pubdate>1999</pubdate><title>ENHANCED THEMATIC MAPPER PLUS SATELLITE IMAGERY PANCHROMATIC - 1999</title><ftname Sync="TRUE">tmpan01.img</ftname><geoform>raster image</geoform><onlink>http://edcdaac.usgs.gov</onlink></citeinfo></citation><timeperd><current>publication date</current><timeinfo><sngdate><caldate>1999</caldate></sngdate></timeinfo></timeperd><status><progress>Complete</progress><update>N/A</update></status><spdom><bounding><westbc>-82.663385</westbc><eastbc>-82.040266</eastbc><northbc>29.939313</northbc><southbc>29.422649</southbc></bounding><lboundng><leftbc Sync="TRUE">529472.500000</leftbc><rightbc Sync="TRUE">588947.500000</rightbc><bottombc Sync="TRUE">602482.500000</bottombc><topbc Sync="TRUE">660697.500000</topbc></lboundng></spdom><keywords><theme><themekt>NONE</themekt><themekey>LANDSAT</themekey><themekey>Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus </themekey><themekey>Florida</themekey></theme></keywords><accconst>NONE</accconst><useconst>NONE</useconst><ptcontac><cntinfo><cntemail>Web site:

The ETM+ also includes new features that make it a more versatile and efficient. The ETM+ instrument is a fixed "whisk-broom", eight-band, multispectral scanning radiometer capable of providing high-resolution imaging information of the Earth's surface. It detects spectrally-filtered radiation in VNIR, SWIR, LWIR and panchromatic bands from the sun-lit Earth in a 183 km wide swath when orbiting at an altitude of 705 km. An ETM+ scene will have an Instantaneous Field Of View (IFOV) of 30 square meters in bands 1-5 and 7 while band 6 will have an IFOV of 60 square meters on the ground and the new band 8 an IFOV of 15 square meters. TMpan is represented here by band 8, rendering a black and white image that is sensitive to all visible colors. </attraccr><qattracc><attracce>Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modelling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data.

1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries.

1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger.

Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact section of this documentation. For more information regarding scale and accuracy, see our webpage at: http://geoplan.ufl.edu/education.html.
