Geodataset Name: EXISTING_TRAILS
Geodataset Type: Shapefile
Geodataset Feature: Polyline
Feature Count: 7267
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This layer is a line shapefile that includes existing recreational trails located in the State of Florida. An existing recreational trail is defined as a paved or unpaved trail for hiking, biking, equestrian, multi-use (non motorized), or paddling use that is open to the public. This does not include in-road bike lanes or sidewalks. This layer is continuously updated by data submissions to the Florida Trails Website (http://ogt.geoplan.ufl.edu) and also by Office of Greenways & Trails Staff. Trails data can be uploaded to the Florida Trails Website, or digitized through an interactive mapping application. For more information, see the Florida Trails Website.

FEATURE ATTRIBUTE TABLES CODES AND VALUES:

Item
Item Description
FID Internal feature number.

Shape Feature geometry.

NAME Trail Name: If a trail is part of a larger trail network, then the larger trail network name would take precedence over a regional or local trail name. For example, a trail that is part of the Florida National Scenic Trail would be designated with NAME = "Florida National Scenic Trail" and NAME2 = Local Trail Name, such as "NAVARRE BIKE PATH".

NAME2 Regional or Local Trail Name: Hiking and multi-use trails are given precedence over bicycle and other road-based trails. If a hiking trail and a bicycle trail took the same route, the hiking trail would be given the NAME and the bicycle trail would be given the NAME2.

NAME3 Additional Local Trail Name: If a trail were part of two larger trail networks, then the local trail name would be given in NAME3.

USER NOTES:

This layer is continuously updated by data submissions to the Florida Trails Website (http://ogt.geoplan.ufl.edu) and also by Office of Greenways & Trails Staff. Trails data can be uploaded to the Florida Trails Website, or digitized through an interactive mapping application.

For data updates or more information on data submittals, please see the Florida Trails Website (ogt.geoplan.ufl.edu).

Attributes for trail segments collected through the Florida Trails Website undergo a QAQC process by the UF GeoPlan Center and by the Office of Greenways & Trails Staff.

This layer is being maintained as part of the Florida Statewide Greenways Planning Project.

A note about data scale:

Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modelling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data.

1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries.

1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger.

Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analysis. Every effort has been made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact section of this documentation. For more information regarding scale and accuracy, see our webpage at: http://geoplan.ufl.edu/education.html
