USER NOTES:
Census Designated Place (CDP) Census designated places (CDPs) (as defined by U.S. Census Bureau) are delineated for each decennial census as the statistical counterparts of incorporated places. CDPs are delineated to provide census data for concentrations of population, housing, and commercial structures that are identifiable by name but are not within an incorporated place. CDP boundaries usually are defined in cooperation with state, local, and tribal officials. These boundaries, which usually coincide with visible features or the boundary of an adjacent incorporated place or other legal entity boundary, have no legal status, nor do these places have officials elected to serve traditional municipal functions. CDP boundaries may change from one decennial census to the next with changes in the settlement pattern; a CDP with the same name as in an earlier census does not necessarily have the same boundary. For Census 2000, for the first time, CDPs did not need to meet a minimum population threshold to qualify for tabulation of census data. For the 1990 census and earlier censuses, the U.S. Census Bureau required CDPs to qualify on the basis of various minimum population size criteria. Beginning with the 1950 census, the U.S.Census Bureau, in cooperation with state and local governments (and American Indian tribal officials starting with the 1990 census), identified and delineated boundaries and names for CDPs. In the data products issued in conjunction with Census 2000, the name of each such place is followed by CDP, as was the case for the 1990 and 1980 censuses. In the data products issued in conjunction with the 1950, 1960, and 1970 censuses, these places were identified by (U), meaning unincorporated place. Hawaii is the only state that has no incorporated places recognized by the U.S.Census Bureau. All places shown in the data products for Hawaii are CDPs. By agreement with the state of Hawaii, the U.S.Census Bureau does not show data separately for the city of Honolulu, which is coextensive with Honolulu County. All places in the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam are CDPs.The Virgin Islands of the United States has both CDPs and incorporated places. There are no CDPs in American Samoa; the U.S. Census Bureau treats the traditional villages as statistically equivalent to incorporated places. The PLACES.shp shapefile contains fields taken from the US Census 2000 Summary 1 file. There are approximately 40 fields that contain demographic data within the shapefile. These fields were created by the geography network and are made up of various fields from the Summary 1 file (for more information look to to "FEATURE ATTRIBUTE TABLES CODES AND VALUES"). If other demographic data is needed then there are additional tables from the Summary 1 file that can be joined to Cenblk.shp. A note concerning data scale: Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modelling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data. 1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:250000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger. Vector datasets with no defined scale or accuracy should be considered suspect. Make sure you are familiar with your data before using it for projects or analyses. Every effort has been made to supply the user with data documentation. For additional information, see the References section and the Data Source Contact section of this documentation. For more information regarding scale and accuracy, see our web pages at: http://www.geoplan.ufl.edu/education.html
FGDL QUALITY ASSURANCE STATUS:
-Merged all Designated Places together by county -Performed a Disslove on item PLACE (Place FIPS code) -Linked 2000 Census Place Demographics (SF1) .DBF to 2000 Designated Places shapefile -Added Descript item based on NAME -Reprojected data to FGDL Albers HPGN (See "Map Projection Parameters" below) -Upcased all character records

DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY:
The Places dataset was enhanced at the Geoplan Center by the addition/standardization of attribute data from the 2000 census Summary 1 file. Digital boundary and attribute data were acquired from the U.S.Census Bureau (http://ftp2.census.gov/census_2000/datasets/ demographic_profile/Florida/) and the Geography Network (http://www.geographynetwork.com) in shapefile format by the GeoPlan Center 2001. When received, the data was in Geographic projection, Datum: NAD83, Spheroid: GRS1980, Units: Decimal degrees. Data was merged by county, reprojected to FGDL Albers HPGN, and redundant polygons were dissolved based on item PLACE. Census Place Demographics (SF1) attribute data was linked to the 2000 Designated Places shapefile, DESCRIPT item was added based on NAME, and lowercase characters within the attribute table were upcased.
