Abstract:
This dataset represents swallets (stream to sink features) discovered, researched and mapped by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Florida Geological Survey, Florida Swallet Survey. The Florida Swallet Survey was a mapping program funded by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Florida Springs Initiative. A swallet is a stream to sink feature, meaning there is a contribution area that concentrates runoff into identifiable streams that disappear underground at a specific point through a sinkhole. The streams may be either intermittent or continuously flowing. Data collected includes: GPS points from a Trimble ProXR and TSC-1 Data Logger; length and width of pools and basins using a range finder; pool depths, if possible, using a hand-held sonar depth finder; color, clarity and visibility of the water in the pool using a secchi disk; photos were taken and written assessments were made of the geology, topography, vegetation, and notations of anything within a 150-meter radius. This dataset represents swallet locations that were within the scope of the Florida Springs Initiative / Florida Swallet Survey project. As such, not all Florida swallets are included in this dataset, and it is by no means comprehensive.
Purpose:
The purpose of this data set is to provide locational reference to stream-to-sink features where surface waters enter karst features and interacts with Florida aquifers.
Supplemental_Information:
This dataset represents swallet locations that were within the scope of the Florida Springs Initiative / Florida Swallet Survey project. As such, not all Florida swallets are included in this dataset, and it is by no means comprehensive.
Many documented swallets are located on non-public lands. These may or may not be accessible to the public and permission to access them MUST be granted by the property owner in advance of any attempt to visit these swallets.

FLORIDA GEOLOGICAL SURVEY - Glossary Swallet: See swallow hole. Swallow Hole: A place where water disappears underground in a limestone region. A swallow hole generally implies water loss in a closed depression or blind valley, whereas a swallet may refer to water loss into alluvium at a streambed, even though there is no depression (Field, 1999). These data should not be used scales larger than 1:10,000. Data should not be used for engineering, survey, cadastral, or land conveyance purposes. Data were collected, processed, and corrected using a Trimble Pro-XR GPS receiver and GPS Pathfinder 4.2 software.

Two full-time and several part-time researchers comb the first magnitude springsheds using topographic maps, aerial photos, USDA soil surveys, and local knowledge in search of potential swallets. With the property owner’s permission, field teams make on-site investigations to determine if a feature qualifies and, if it does, it is then cataloged. A true swallet is a stream to sink feature, meaning there is a contribution area that concentrates runoff into identifiable streams that disappear underground at a specific point. The streams may be either intermittent or continuously flowing. Data collected includes: GPS points and areas using a backpack Trimble; length and width of pools and basins using a range finder; pool depths, if possible, using a hand-held sonar depth finder; color, clarity and visibility of the water in the pool using a secchi disk; photos are taken and written assessments are made of the geology, topography, vegetation, and notations of anything within a 150-meter radius.

A note about data scale:
Scale is an important factor in data usage. Certain scale datasets are not suitable for some project, analysis, or modeling purposes. Please be sure you are using the best available data.
1:24000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the county level. 1:24000 data should NOT be used for high accuracy base mapping such as property parcel boundaries. 1:100000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the multi-county or regional level. 1:125000 scale datasets are recommended for projects that are at the regional or state level or larger.
